Do you sometimes feel like you are a human doing rather than a human being? Life is a blessing, and we should be active participants in our own story. Finding purpose in life, and taking time to enjoy the journey can be the key to a meaningful life. Hint: it is not necessarily about accumulation of money and things. ...less

The demographics of this country are on an irreversible course towards a beautiful and colorful tapestry of humanity. If you are not as intentional about making your organization a big, welcoming tent to those who don't look exactly like you, who can bring their life experiences to your world, and make all better for it, you may be cheating your employees out of daily learning, and perhaps your shareholders out of profits. Understand the difference between the illusion of equality and the imperativeness of equity, and how making unconscious bias driven decisions is bad for business. ...less
Embedded Racism: A Major Deterrent to a More Perfect UnionCulture

Can America be a racist country, while at the same time, not all of its citizens are racist? You bet it can. The systems that impact our American journey such as education, housing, jobs, justice, voting, and healthcare have suffered years of intentionally baked-in racism that has rigged these systems against people of color and poor people since the Pilgrims first landed and started stealing land from the indigenous people they found already thriving here. The Constitution itself made allowances for blatant racism and sexism. To be sure, there are many Americans however, who are okay with acknowledging this reality and not wanting to suppress history, but rather find solutions to bridging the racial divide. This is an uncomfortable topic to be sure. It will take being uncomfortable, and as intentional about eliminating the barriers that are holding our nation back, as we were when the idea of race was created specifically to divide us. Only then will are ever going to become that more perfect union. Together. ...less

Pointing fingers and casting aspersions without offering any solutions of one's own seems to be the order of the day in places our elected officials call their place of work. They have gotten so good at this childish behavior that nothing seems to get done, and we the people they supposedly represent, play second fiddle to political parties and power grabs. But have we the people been lulled into a similar state in some ways? We point fingers and complain about these politicians, but then blindly put them back in office by holding our nose and voting for a party, or worse, not voting at all. We need to be less about belly-aching, and more about finding solutions. Often, those solutions lie with us. ...less

Perhaps it’s just me, but do you ever feel like you are drowning in a sea of acronyms? It seems like we’ve added the practice of abbreviation to everything in our lives. The overuse of acronyms fits right along with technology driven ways to squeeze more work into our days at the expense of faith, family, and health. The world we live in wants things right now, even if what we end up with at the end of the day is some diluted version of that which we were searching for in the first place. Economy of words does not necessarily equate to a more clear-cut understanding. Sometimes we must spell things out for folks in order that they truly get where we are coming from. Not doing so risks taking away the human factor from life’s precious interactions. ...less

Most companies that endure and thrive in either the social profit or for-profit sectors, tend to be those that can effectively illustrate their true value proposition to, and passion for, the communities it serves. Additionally, goods and/or services notwithstanding, they can also clearly define what the return on investment (ROI) is for said transaction. Being able to do those things can take a company from being merely transactional, to one that is transcendent and seen as a true community partner. An organization with a social profit mindset is in it for the long haul. Believe me, most people know the difference. We can fake many things in life. Passion and commitment are not among them. As the saying attributed to President Abraham Lincoln goes, “You can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.” One might therefore argue that being true with yourself and others, and speaking truth to power are part of the social profit mindset. ...less
