  • Elements of Eloquence: Learn the Art of Speaking With Substance and Style
  • The Language of Leadership: Learn to Speak Decisively, Confidently, and Authoritatively
  • When asked to give a speech, do you look forward to the opportunity? Not many people do. If you are like most people, the prospect of giving a speech or oral presentation of any sort unleashes a torrent of unpleasant emotions, from anxiety, to dread, to sheer panic.
  • It doesn't have to be this way. Speaking to an audience can be as simple as speaking on the telephone once you learn what all effective speakers know: a good speech is good conversation, whether seated or standing. Once you learn to speak with an audience instead of to them you're well on your way to being an effective speaker.
  • This is one of the many proven strategies I have successfully taught to business communicators worldwide. Among the other topics I cover as a part of this presentation:
  • Getting started quickly and simply: Learn how to research your topic and write your speech.
  • Presenting with confidence and poise: Learn what the audience expects from you and how to meet those expectations. Learn why stage fright is not necessarily your enemy and how to use it to your advantage.
  • Increasing comprehension and memorability: Learn how to keep the audience focused on your message. (And then remember it.)
  • Delivering your message with style: Learn to use a desirable rate of speech, volume, and rhythm.
  • Overcoming "humor-phobia": Learn to find and use appropriate, relevant, and timely humor to anchor your points.
  • Always begin with a strong opening: Do you know when you have the audience's greatest attention? The first 90 seconds.
  • Keep your ideas united by one theme: Churchill said, "A speech is like a symphony. It can have three movements, but it must have one dominant melody." Make big points with simple language Effective leaders are effective translators, always turning the complex into the simple.
  • Illustrate: bring the abstract to life: Aristotle in his Rhetoric wrote that one of the hardest things for a speaker is to come up with the analogy or word picture. By examining your daily life's experiences, however, explanatory stories and anecdotes can be easier than most speakers believe.
  • End with a powerful emotional appeal: As a boxer can tell you, a punch in the gut is more effective than a punch in the head.
